Study on Women Participation in Local Governance

Objectives

To gauge the extent of participation of women in local governance and what facilitates or hinders their participation.

Geographical spread

Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttaranchal

Key areas/components

The research was organized around the themes of:

• Participation in the functioning of panchayats and urban local bodies
• Gender relations within the institutional locations of household, community and local self-governance institutions which either strengthen or inhibit their participation in governance
• Perceptions about women elected representatives’ performance

Key outputs

The study highlighted the constraints faced by women in governance (individual, societal, structural set up, etc) and the methods that have been employed to overcome them.
