Study on Multi-Party Accountability for Environmentally Sustainable Industrial Development: The Challenge of Active Citizenship – A Study of Stakeholders in Simhadri Thermal Power Project, Andhra Pradesh

Objectives

To study the socio-economic anddemographic characteristics of the villagers.
To find out perceptions and experiences of the villagers about the impact of NTPC on environment, family and health.
To ascertain the strategies/tactics adopted by villagers to influence and negotiate their stakes.
To find out the accountability of the multi-parties who are directly or indirectly involved in different processes of industrial development.
To make suggestions for policy and practice.

Geographical spread

Study was carried out in 11 villages near the Simhadri Thermal Power Project, Paravada, Vishakhapatnam district, Andhra Pradesh and involved 107 respondents (70 men and 37 women).

Key areas/components

Participatory research methods were employed which include:
- Transect walk
- Gram sabha
- Focus group discussion
Structured interview which covered respondent’s personal information, land holdings, acquisition and compensation as well as employment details.
Video recordings and photographs: A documentary of approx. 30 minutes was prepared and photographs were used as a tool kit.

Key outputs

Profiles of affected villages.
Results from the data collected: Social characteristics, land holding and acquisition, details of compensation and utilization, employment, health, etc.
Emerging issues and suggestions for environmentally sustainable industrial development were identified.
