Objectives
To explore the understanding and experience of the Santals residing in Santal Pargansa, Jharkhand, about their citizenship, specifically:

Multiple meanings, the notion of citizenship has for them and the associated identities;

Institutional arrangement influencing the meaning of citizenship and their inclusion/exclusion in matters related to governance.

Impact of their understanding andexperience on social andpolitical participation in matters related to governance

Approach followed was that of participatory research.

Data collection involved different kinds of respondents: ‘invisible’ members; ‘articulate’ members of the community and NGO functionaries; government officials, academicians and advocates

Data collection methods included observations, transect walk, group discussions, dialogue, semi-structured interviews, oral history and a review of secondary literature.
