The issue of lack of sanitation (open defecation) is linked to human health, dignity and safety of women and children. People across rural areas in Chhattisgarh predominantly practice open defecation due to traditionally accepted behavior. Across the world wherever open –defecation if practiced women become prisoners of darkness. Government & several voluntary organizations have implemented many interventions & brought together huge resources but were unable to impact the change in reality. The major reasons for this deficit noticed as: Lack of involvement & demand within communities or target audiences. To address the issue PRIA, Water Aid & State Public Health Engineering Department of Chhattisgarh came together to stimulate community demand & participation at large scale. The proposed interventions will be implemented in Ambikapur & Raipur districts (as these areas having high proportion on open defecation practice).
