PRIA organised a two-day training on Organisational Management for programme and support staff of Nirmana, a Delhi based civil society organisation started in 1988 to provide logistic support to the National Campaign Committee – Construction Labour. The Committee has been at the forefront campaigning for a comprehensive central legislation to provide social security and labour welfare to construction workers who now comprise over 30 million out of 370 million unorganised sector workers.

Fourteen employees, of which nine were women, spent the two days developing an understanding on organisational framework, leadership, communication and human resource management. Almost 50% of the participants work as community mobilisers in Nirmana. Some of them have been associated with Nirmana for more than ten years.
The focus of the training was to develop an organisational framework that included a common understanding of the vision, mission and strategy of Nirmana. A SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) analysis of the organisation was led by the participants, who acknowledged some of the opportunities available to them and the threats they face due to external factors. The group also discussed if some of the strengths could be turned into opportunities for Nirmana. In subsequent sessions, the participants learnt about their individual leadership styles, building skills which will help them manage teams better. They also received training on communication and human resource management, in particular how to set up an Internal Complaints Committee to prevent sexual harassment at the workplace.

An active group of participants, open to learning, helped Nirmana consolidate its vision and mission across the organization, which will help implement its strategy more effectively.
