A condolence meeting was held at PRIA on 16 November in memory of Dr Jockin Arputham, Founder President of National Slum Dwellers Federation (NSDF), Mahila Milan and SPARC, who passed away on 14th October 2018.

Dr Jockin Arputham was a dynamic community leader, who inspired the slum dwellers of Mumbai and at least 70 other cities in India and around the world to fight for their rights against eviction. He fought alongside them, always giving communities the confidence that they have the power to make the change.

Jockin was a close associate of Sheela Patel, member of PRIA's Governing Board and Founder-President of SPARC. National Slum Dwellers Federation and SPARC have worked together for more than 3 decades, building federations and strengthening women's participation and community leadership. "Jockin's legacy of creating and spreading the Federation model of organising urban poor communities, which gives them the strength in numbers to fight for their rights is unparalleled. His journey and work should become part of the education and learning of all students of social work," said Ms Sheela Patel at the condolence ceremony. "He was a very good friend. We fought and argued till all of us at ASDF and SPARC agreed to the strategy to be employed for bringing about change. This was a true partnership."

PRIA pays homage to the activism and leadership of Jockin Arputham. He will be sorely missed.
