On 5 June 2026, PRIA, in collaboration with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Centre for Research and Innovation (DWIH) New Delhi, organised a networking dinner and panel discussion titled International Collaboration and Societal Impact: Advancing Participatory Research at The Claridges, New Delhi.

As part of DWIH New Delhi's annual focus theme, Science for Society, the event brought together academicians, institutional leaders, researchers, and practitioners to explore pathways for creating more inclusive, reciprocal, and impactful frameworks for international collaboration. The panel was chaired by Dr. Rajesh Tandon and featured distinguished speakers, including Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee (DAAD), Dr. Arjan de Haan (International Development Research Centre – IDRC), Prof. Sonajharia Minz (Jawaharlal Nehru University), and Basheera Shaik (UK Research and Innovation).

A key theme that emerged during the discussion was the need to redefine the relationship between researchers and communities. Panelists emphasised that communities should not be viewed merely as research subjects but as equal partners in knowledge creation, contributing valuable expertise, lived experiences, and contextual understanding that enrich research outcomes.

The discussion also highlighted the underrepresentation of indigenous and local knowledge systems in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. Speakers underscored that participatory research requires respect for sovereign local knowledge, meaningful community engagement, flexible funding mechanisms, and equitable sharing of ownership, recognition, and benefits.

Drawing on experiences from Germany's citizen-engaged research ecosystem and community-led initiatives across the United Kingdom, India, Canada, and Colombia, the panel showcased the transformative potential of international collaborations grounded in participation, equity, and mutual learning. The event reinforced the importance of addressing systemic biases and fostering research partnerships that generate meaningful societal impact.
