Ms. Martha Farrell

Ms. Martha Farrell, (Director), PRIA,an alumnus of Delhi University, Ms. Farrell holds a degree of Masters of Social Work. Her career spans more than 25 years in the field of education, research and policy advocacy, especially on issues related to gender. She has written extensively on women and gender related issues and has presented papers in various national and international conferences and workshops. She has written manuals for the teaching of the adult learner which are translated into several languages and used extensively in the Adult Literacy Programme of the country. In recent years, she has established the PRIA International Academy of Lifelong Learning. Her research areas and interests include women's political empowerment, gender mainstreaming in organisations (especially the issue of prevention of sexual harassment) and continuing education and local governance.

Ms. Nandita Pradhan Bhatt

Ms. Nandita Pradhan Bhatt, (Assistant Programme Manager), PIALL is a development professional and has been associated with the sector for more than 12 years. During her career as a development professional, among other things, Nandita has focused upon Gender Mainstreaming at an institutional level, which has included working on the prevention and redressal of sexual harassment in the workplace.

COURSE SUMMARY

Despite various affirmative actions, including the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments that have accorded Indian women scope for political representation, most women face constraints in pursuing a political career.

This ten week course in intended to act as a guide for those individuals and organisations who work with WERs, interested in participating in the governance process at the local level- Panchayats or Municipalities.

It is expected that upon completion of this course, participants will develop an understanding of issues such as

  • An understanding of constituency building
  • Conflict resolution and peace building
  • Setting of agendas and conducting of meetings
  • Developing leadership skills
  • Building knowledge of the varied levels of governance – local to national
  • Public speaking
  • Media interaction

On completion of the course the learner will:

  • Gain insight into factors that hinder women from participating in politics
  • Develop an enhanced understanding of strategies for strengthening women's active participation in political leadership role
  • Learn skills on facilitating enabling environments for women's political participation and leadership
