In nearly thirty-five years, PRIA has undertaken more than 300 projects in diverse areas of work and in different regions around the world. PRIA has pioneered the concept of participatory research in bringing about social change among the marginalised in India and in other Asian countries.  PRIA’s projects are always premised on participatory principles; all or many stages of a project incorporate participatory research principles and methodologies in implementation.

PRIA’s has undertaken projects in the following areas:

Adult Education and Lifelong Learning

These projects are related to preparing and educating a new generation of professionals to enhance knowledge, skills, professional values, sensitivities and creating lifelong learning orientations.

Capacity Building

These projects are focused in the areas of human and institutional capacity building with a variety of institutions including community based organisations, citizens’ associations, civil society organisations, local governance institutions, etc.

Citizen Participation

These projects are focused on building and facilitating participation of citizens in development, democracy and governance. It also includes research projects to synthesis, communicate and mobilise knowledge around the theme of citizenship and social accountability.

Citizen Leadership

These projects demonstrate PRIA’s work in developing enlightened and responsible leadership among citizens and their networks to facilitate meaningful interface between citizen groups and governance institutions to articulate their demands and access rights and entitlements.

Civil Society

These projects relate to PRIA’s work in building capacities of civil society organisations, research on the civil society sector  (variedly referred to as non-profit, voluntary, non-government, etc), and engagement of civil society with other stakeholders.

Democratic Local Governance

These projects are focused on strengthening local governance to make them effective, transparent, accountable, participatory and responsive. Many of these projects promoted participation in local governance institutions.

Gender Mainstreaming

These projects relate to PRIA’s work on promoting gender mainstreaming in institutions and programmes, deepening the understanding on gender and related concepts, training and capacity building to prevent sexual harassment at the workplace and initiatives to address violence against women.

Institutional/Organisation Development

These projects focus on PRIA’s pioneering and continuing work in organisation development, strategic planning, participatory monitoring and evaluationfor civil society organisations.

Occupational Health

These projects include participatory research on workers’ occupational and environmental health issues,safety in the workplace, social security schemesand role of relevant governance and regulatory institutions.

Panchayati Raj Institutions

These projects includePRIA’s work on free and fair elections using PEVAC (Pre-Election Voter Awareness Campaigns), capacity building of elected representativessuch as Panchayati Raj Jagrukta Abhiyan (PRJA), engagements with State Finance Commissions and providing technical support toMinistry of Panchayati Raj of Government of India as well as various state governments and various policy making institutions such as NITI Aayog.

Participatory Development

These projects are focused on promoting participatory development by civil society organisations and impact assessments of various development projects.

Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation

These projects highlight PRIA’s approach to Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation (PM&E) based on its perspectives of participatory research. These are focused on promoting self-critical reflections among grassroots organisations and facilitating Learning Monitoring and Evaluation (LME) framework and practices.

Participatory Natural Resource Management

These projects are focused on strengthening community based organisations of the poor and the marginalised - women, tribals, rural poor for enhancing their access to and control over natural resources particularly forest, water, and land.

Participatory Planning

These projects are focused onfacilitating participatory planning, including preparing training manuals for use in capacity enhancement programmes at district levels and below and monitoring of decentralised planning efforts.

Participatory Research

These projects focus on developing a wide variety of methods, approaches and tools that promote participation in research, planning, monitoring and evaluation.

Participatory Training and Learning

These projects highlight PRIA’s unique and pioneering Participatory Training Methodologies and their applications in a variety of sectors and themes.

Social Accountability

These projects focus on facilitating applications of various innovative social accountability tools and provided trainings and systematisation of social accountability tools.

Urban Governance

These projects relate to research and advocacy for devolution to municipalities, municipal finance, participatory town planning/ participatory city development plans, ensuring public service delivery to marginalised, democratising urban governanceand engaging with Ministry of Urban Development and other policy making institutions.

Urban Poverty

These projects focus on promoting coalitions and of the urban poor for strengthening their voices and building capacities of civil society to address issues related to urban poverty.

Women’s Empowerment and Development

These projects focus on strengtheningwomen’s political leadership and promoted women’s participation in planning and development with a particular focus on local governance institutions.
