Dr. Rajesh Tandon is President-Founder of Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), a voluntary organization providing support to grass roots initiatives in South Asia. Dr. Tandon is an internationally acclaimed leader and practitioner of participatory research and development. He has served on numerous government task forces and committees both nationally and internationally. He is also the UNESCO Co-Chair for Community Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education.

COURSE SUMMARY

The course mainly deals with what should be the way ahead for Urban Planning with the participation of the individuals residing in these urban areas, especially the urban poor.

In this course, learners will be looking at traditional approach to urban planning and how it can be exclusive and detached from the real demands of the people. Participatory urban planning should thus be seen as a pioneering notion for socially inclusive growth.

But, due to conventional hierarchies inherent in bureaucracies and professional rigidities, the implementation of people's participation in urban planning becomes difficult. The potential of decentralised urban participatory planning far exceeds the possible constraints. This course contributes, in terms of both theory and practice, for bringing about this desirable change in the approach towards urban planning.
