Innovation in Selection of Labour-intensive Work (Chhattisgarh)
During the intensive campaigning in Ambagarh Chowki, a meeting was organised in the Semarbandha panchayat, where the elected representatives (ERs), secretary, rural employment assistant, AWWs, members of Nigrani Samiti and a group of labourers were mobilised. The intention was to provide orientation on the NREGA scheme benefits and its entitlements. While the facilitator encouraged the villagers to share their viewpoints and experiences, it was observed that due to lack of planning only few people are getting jobs under the scheme. If planning was done in a participatory way, more people could be employed. It was also shared by one of the labourers that the work that could be done by them, instead of being given to the "tractor wala". For example, under Road Connectivity project, loading and transporting the soil and other raw material could be done with their bullock carts but this type of work is directly given to the contractor. Finally, a consensus was reached in the meeting for the selection of labour intensive work. It was decided that instead of using five tractors, only two will be used for starting the work at the site, and bullock carts will replace the remaining three tractors.
