Objectives
The initiative sought to accomplish three purposes that will contribute to strengthening future leadership in the sector:

To generate a theory of civil society leadership in an increasingly interdependent world, where civil society is critical in regional and national as well as local governance and development,

To create systems for leadership development and capacity building that enhances the capacities of civil society for meeting its goals, and
-
To construct institutional alliances and learning networks that can respond to emerging issues and demand for leadership development.

A total of 24 participants attended this meeting including one each from Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and two from Harvard University, USA. On the first day of the workshop a larger group participated in general brainstorming sessions and then on the second day a core group of 14 people discussed the future plan. The meeting explored the emerging challenges facing civil society in the region as perceived by participants. Participants identified a variety of challenges that might erode the ability of civil society leadership to take advantage of their growing leverage for development in the region.

The planning meeting developed an initial list of leadership development issues, a planned sequence of activities, and agreement on initial roles and time investments. A Program Steering Committee with members from each South Asian country and a secretariat at PRIA was established to facilitate and steer this initiative in the coming months in a time bound manner. Several follow up actions were undertaken after the initial planning workshop:
