The project was undertaken to study the socio-economic profile of the villagers and the perception of the village people with regard to their experiences, both positive and negative, of industrial development.
Objectives:

To study the socio-economic profile of the villagers.

To study the perception of the village people with regard to their experiences both positive & negative of Industrial development.

To understand the informal & formal methods used by the villagers to influence & negotiate for their stakes.

To understand the perception of village people about aspects like accountability & responsibility, development & citizenship.
Geographical Spread:
Sample of 7 villages situated in the proximity of the Lote – Parshuram Chemical Industry belt, Chiplun Maharashtra.
The sample consisted of 97 respondents (53 – Men; 44 – Women)
Key areas/components:

Research study was quantitative & descriptive in design.

Interviews were also conducted for MIDC representatives, Pollution Control Board representatives, NOCIL executive engineer, a doctor and a representative of the Lote Parshuram Chemical Industries Association.

Tools of data collection: Statistical data of the 7 villages, Focus group discussions, Interviews.

Plan of analysis: identified stakeholders, their accountability.

Analysis of the statistical data: village wise distribution, wadi wise distribution, religion wise, caste wise, age of the respondents, education, occupation etc.

Analysis through focus group discussions regarding topics such as safety equipment & facilities, Family income, landholding & acquisitions, direct impact of industrialization, perceptions of villagers about accountability of Govt./Industries/MIDC etc., perceptions of concepts like sustainable development & participation, methods of negotiation with industries

Case studies of the villages studied.

Conclusion: Sustainable development can be achieved only if development process happens in unison.
