Course Rationale

Sport has enjoyed universal appeal for much of human history and its importance to society continues to be the object of contemporary research, literature, and media. As a cultural activity, it shows its prevalence all over the world and is widely considered an important leisure and recreational activity. In the last few decades, the growth and popularity of sport has led to its global commercialization, giving rise to mega fan following, a new league of sports celebrities and sizable consumption as a form of entertainment.

In recent years, however, there has been an increased interest from a wide variety of public and private stakeholders in the power of sport to achieve developmental outcomes. This interest is backed by evidence showing that sport-based interventions have the potential to address a wide variety  of development outcomes. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), participation in sport and physical activity can have a profound impact on the physical and mental health of an individual. Additionally, sport has the ability to cut across a range of physical and cultural boundaries to unite people,  making ‘Sport for Development’ (S4D), an essential field of inquiry. There is a great need for professionals to navigate and understand this emerging but important sector in order to ascertain sport’s rising power is handled responsibly.

This course highlights the essentials of this discipline and invites individuals working in related fields to help develop their understanding of the same. It is reasoned that the course can serve as an interesting pit-stop in one’s professional development journey.

This course has been designed to make it relevant to practitioners, government officials, policy makers, social workers, sports trainers and managers as well as students and researchers who have limited insight into S4D but are interested in building their knowledge and capacity to integrate S4D approaches within their overall development frameworks.

The course has been developed by Pro Sport Development (PSD), in collaboration with UNESCO New Delhi and the PRIA International Academy (PIA).
